To beard or not to beard?
It’s a question that’s long kept scientific researchers very busy indeed (we would have thought there may have been more pressing issues to address? But we’re here for it regardless).
Of course, there are many reasons to grow a mo – breakup beards, holiday scruff and raising money for men’s health during the month of November are just three, but what a lot of us don’t know, are the many ways beards can change people’s perceptions of who we appear to be.
If you’re dabbling with the idea of growing some stubble, then let these three science-backed reasons convince you to eschew your razor. Once and for all.
1. Bearded beaus are better in long-term relationships
A 2016 study from the University of Queensland found that men with full beards were the most attractive to heterosexual females in long-term relationships.
Out of the 8,520 women aged 18 to 100, all of them, yes, all of them, preferred their men scruffed up. Why? Because apparently, they’re “rated as older, more masculine, more socially dominant and aggressive-looking” than their fuzz-free counterparts, who funnily enough came in at the number one spot for a fling.
2. Stubble makes a more trusted employee, apparently
Your pre-conceived idea that you simply must shave for that upcoming job interview is invalid. Because a recent study which examined bearded Vs. clean-shaven LinkedIn members found that those whose photos featured facial hair were regarded to possess more “expertise”.
A second, more recent survey also found that bewhiskered bros were indeed considered more trustworthy.
3. Face fur can keep you looking young
Though they’re thought to make a man appear more mature, facial fur has been found to prevent wrinkles and further signs of ageing by its ability to block 90 to 95 per cent of harmful UV rays from touching the skin.
Not only that, beards lock in the natural oils of skin, which keep a man’s face feeling moisturised and smooth on the inside, even if the outside feels like it could sand a deck.
By now you’re surely feeling compelled to let your hair down, so to speak, but we should point out that all of the positive associations with beards in the studies above applied to those that were groomed on the reg.
So before you go ahead and let your inner Hagrid shine, you may want to take the appropriate measures and purchase the correct tools for optimum man-tenance.
